It’s about a heartbroken man finding redemption in the chance encounter with his former love. A folk-influnced song, it's more a story set to music than a verse/chorus construction. This is the only song that will consistently make me tear up. What begins as a sparse, synthetic track builds into a whirlwind as instruments pile on, finally exploding into an utterly cathartic tribal chant. Where Underworld runs in circles, though, Matt Johnson fights his way out. Much like “Dirty Epic, this is another 9-minute lament on isolation and personal identity.

Now that I’m through that phase, the strength of that connection has faded, but I’m still grateful for how it helped me. And then I found this album, and it not only expressed what I was feeling perfectly, but it also offered a stronger alternate view. I was depressed and in one of those “oh my god, I’ll be alone forever funks. I’d just broken up with my long-term girlfriend, I was taking summer courses at college, and no one I knew was living within 30 miles of me. This album is probably the one I had the strongest single connection to in my life. This never fails to put me in a good mood. Yes, it's a bit hacky, but it's also completely joyful.

I’ve chosen the extended version from the single because I adore the additional instrumental sections.Ĭornershop - “Brimful of Asha (Norman Cook Full Length Remix)â€? This song, and the accompanying album, made me sit up and notice pop music as a vital genre in itself. It cribs a bit from the Beatles—the la-la-la chorus, the brass and string backing—but it’s immaculately well-crafted. At its heart, it's a song that's been written thousands of ways: being lonely, listening to music, masturbating. It’s not the misanthropy that’s the point, it’s the overpowering excitement contained therein.Ī sad pop song streched to infinity. But it’s got a manic energy that’s impossible to ignore. It’s not a pleasant song by any means the title is the phone number at the Manson compound, and the lyrics are a fevered rant about ritual killing and eternal life. I couldn’t give a definite explanation as to why this is my favorite song by Jim Thirlwell. Scraping Foetus off the Wheel - “DI-1-9026â€? I adore the ethereal warmth of this track, like a half-remembered dream captured. I was literally moved to tears when I finally heard it live. “Halcyonâ€? was the first Orbital track I heard (on the Mortal Kombat soundtrack, of all god-forsaken places), and it hit me immediately and never lost its touch. I love how a catchy, moving song can simultaneously embody such harshness and noise. Bolting a 4/4 acoustic guitar bridge to a 13/8 verse built on squealing machinery and screams blew my mind, once I got my head around what was actually going on. The construction of this still amazes me, both in songwriting and production terms.
